Chasing the Black Rooster

Absolute war on terror in Africa

A trilogy

About the plot

The plot deals with events that occurred during the final three years of the Angolan civil war,  (1999-2002) from a new angle, which has, until now, remained unknown.

Angola’s civil war, which began with the expulsion of the Portuguese colonialists who had ruled the country since 1483, had been raging for twenty-five years.

Diamond search in the river

The struggle between the Marxist government MPLA (People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola) and the allegedly pro-west UNITA (National Union for the Total Independence of Angola), spanned borders and continents, and led the major powers to intervene. Both sides used their own people as hostages, the country was destroyed, and its inhabitants had their possessions looted, were shot, and were exiled from their homes under the pressure of the warring parties. The struggle, which began as an ideological conflict, became a bloody war for control of the vast diamond fields of Angola.

After twenty-five years of war, the black rooster flag of UNITA, controlled entirely by the charismatic Jonas Malheiro Savimbi, flew in all rural areas stretching between the few remaining cities still in the hands of the government.

In early 1999, in exchange for the output of oil fields in Angola, private companies began to lead the process that would remove Savimbi from the scene and end the war.
